Shion Watanabe (渡辺 しおん Watanabe Shion) is a high school student who attends the same school as Mari Inuyashiki, Naoyuki Andō and Hiro Shishigami.

Shion is a fair-skinned young girl with short curly hair and hazel eyes.

She is often seen wearing her school uniform, but also her outdoor clothes.

Personality[]

Shion is a kind and quiet girl who keeps to herself at school, interacting to a select few girls that go unnoticed because of being unattractive and unpopular, as does she.

She is quite compassionate about Hiro Shishigami and persists to believe in his innocence and good nature even though he shows signs of sociopathic behavior. She develops feelings for Hiro when he defends Naoyuki Andō against bullies falsely trusting him to be empathetic, but later realizing the irony in her decisions and disassociating with Hiro while still having deep feelings for him.

Plot[]

Shion talks to Hiro Shishigami and confesses after she witnesses him save Naoyuki Andō. Eventually, after Hiro flees from the police, she picks him up and lets him live with her and her grandmother while refusing to believe he is a murderer. She eventually finds out he is the murderer, but somehow manages to convince him to become a good person. This lasts for a while before the SWAT Team shoots her and her grandma, leaving them gravely wounded. Though, they reappear just fine with them noticing that Hiro leaves money in their bank account.

In Episode 11, Shion becomes saddened upon seeing that Hiro was planning to self-destruct himself in order to destroy the asteroid.

Relationships[]

Hiro Shishigami[]

Shion has a crush on Hiro and they later develop a romantic relationship.

In Episode 11, she becomes saddened at Hiro's death after he sacrifices himself by self-destructing himself.

At end of the manga, she and Naoyuki Andō mourn together at the loss of Hiro and Ichirō Inuyashiki.

Etymology[]

  • The name Shion is written in hiragana (しおん), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (紫苑 or 詩音), it could possibly mean:
    • 紫苑 - "aster", which are daisy-like flowers that fill the late-season landscape with masses of blue, pink, purple, and white.
    • 詩音 - "poetry, poem" (詩) (shi) and "sound" (音) (on).
  • Shion's surname Watanabe means "transit, ford, ferry, cross, import, deliver, diameter, migrate" (渡) (wataru) and "environs, boundary, border, vicinity" (辺) (be).
    • Watanabe is is a common surname in Japan.

Trivia[]

  • Shion is affectionately called "pube head" by the others due to the style of her hair, something which she dislikes.
  • In the live-action movie, Shion (along with her grandmother) die after being shot by the SWAT team sent to hunt Shishigami.
